Jesus is the True Light
Scripture: John 1:4-9(NIV)
4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

Fear of the Dark: It’s a common fear. Children are often afraid of the dark. This fear of the dark carries over to adulthood, especially for women. My office had a women’s lunch recently, and the question was, “what is something simple that you would do if fear was not an option.” Several women said they would go outside at night without fear. We are taught in college not to take a walk or run at night. Never leave a party by yourself. Stay with your buddy. Anything can be lurking around in the dark.
The dark represents the unknown. The unknown is scary. As my parents got older, they began taking a night light with them to hotels and even to my house. The darkness in the middle of the night can be a scary place when looking for a restroom. They need night lights to guide them to the light switch.
John 1:5 says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not overcome it.” This is a reminder that true light is greater than all darkness. We do not need to be fearful because the light will always shine.
John 1 continues talking about John the Baptist. This may not be the best analogy but maybe John is the night light. John is a witness to the light just as a night light leads the way to the light switch. John the Baptist led the way to Jesus.
Jesus is the true light. The true light that overcomes the darkness. Jesus can take away our fear of the unknown. Jesus can lead us into the light. This true light is the reason why we are born with any love or goodness. Jesus’ true light is given to the world. True light always wins over darkness. What fear of darkness do you have that Jesus can lead you from?
