    Creating Wholesome Community

    Scripture: Ephesians 4:25-32(NIV)

25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

    Devotional

It was 46 plus years ago when I was sitting at a bridal shower. It was my bridal shower. I remember that the guests were to write down on a piece of paper advice for this soon to be newlywed bride. Somebody, I have no idea who, wrote “Don’t let the sun set on your ire.” I was almost 24 years old, and I had never heard of that before. That is the only advice that I remember from that shower. I must admit I thought I knew what that meant, however, after studying today’s scriptures it has a whole new meaning for my life.

Paul is concerned with making us more Christ like. He is telling us to stop bad behavior, think right and do what is right. He is not comparing but contrasting our lives as Christians. Sounds easy, right? Easier said than done.

We are to be truthful with our words and stop the deception of half-truths like omissions. If you are going to be angry, be angry at sin. Don’t let your anger compel you into sin. This is where “Don’t let the sun set on your ire” comes into the picture. It is really a figure of speech meaning we need to deal with our sin soon. If it is not dealt with, it leaves a door open for Satan to lead us further into sin.

The 7th commandment is don’t steal. It means don’t take your time and talent away for the church or God, instead work to share or give to the needy. Speak good things in order build up others. Your words can give grace, encourage others, help, and gratify. Corrupt speaking is foul and you become reckless with your words. Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit with your sin but surrender and then let the Holy Spirit be in charge of your life.

You can forgive, but can you forget to have a harmonious relationship with Christ? Will you allow Christ to radically transform you and overhaul your life in every aspect to live a Christ centered life? We are to live out this calling. With God’s help we all can live up to Paul’s challenge.
