Worthy of the Calling
Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-8(NIV)
1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it says:
“When he ascended on high,
he took many captives
and gave gifts to his people.”
Devotional
In Ephesians 4, Paul urges Christians to live a life worthy of their calling. You might ask, how can we do this since we are all sinners saved by God’s grace, yet not one of us is really “worthy” of our calling? But God loved us so much that He sent Jesus to bear our sins on the cross; whereby, we can live with the guidance and working of the Holy Spirit in and through us. Apart from God, we can do nothing, but with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).
When I was a young girl, I remember the flannel graph stories I learned in my Sunday school classes about the armor of God. You probably learned about them, too, and like me, you probably “dressed” a soldier in the pieces of armor. In our future readings in Ephesians, we will read about the armor of God that each of us must wear consistently to walk with God worthily. Here are the pieces: Belt of Truth, Breastplate of Righteousness, Shoes of the Gospel of Peace, Shield of Faith, Helmet of Salvation, and Sword of the Spirit.
Years ago when I lived in Wisconsin, I joined the church congregation in a vow “…to resolve and promise, in humble reliance upon the grace of the Holy Spirit, to endeavor to live as becomes a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.” This vow reminded me of Paul’s admonition to live in full accordance with God’s Word. He taught us how to walk worthy of the calling by putting on the armor of God (Ephesians 6). As we follow the teachings of the Scriptures deliberately and consistently, we will make those righteous choices that are pleasing to God. As our source for faith and practice, the Bible is our offensive “weapon” to confront the world. By putting on God’s armor, we are enabled to testify to the blessings He has given us and share the good news of the Gospel with others.
Prayer: Dear Father, Thank You for equipping and protecting us with the armor of God. Help us to use it in our service to You this day. Help us to walk worthy of the Lord by sharing His love and being faithful to Him. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
