Making the Most of Every Opportunity

    Scripture: Ephesians 5:15-20(NIV)

15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Devotional

This Scripture encourages us to be careful in our daily lives. We need to live our lives for God’s glory. We are temped, every day, to stray from focus upon our Savior God. It is so easy to stray from a righteous path. One way we can stay focused is to remember our Lord with songs, hymns, and prayers.

Years ago, I was in a management position and was told, by upper management, that my profits didn’t cover expenses and I was to “chop a head.” My shortest-time employee had been with us for 12 years. I looked at the operating statement and decided our sales force could easily bring us up to a level that justified every employee’s cost. We went to work and brought our income up to that level and I did not fire the employee.

Later, I got a call to drop everything and drive to Evanston, IL, the next day. It was our regional manager’s office. I was to cancel all appointments and just drive. I was scared. I believed he was bringing me up there to fire me. On the way up I prayed and a song came into my head. It was a song the choir had been practicing and basically said in faith, God can move mountains. We must trust Him. I walked into the office with confidence that God was right with me. I delivered proof that our expenses were justified and my actions were justified. The boss looked at the figures and at me and said, “Okay, I get it. You can go, but the next time I tell you to do something, you do it.”

Shortly after that, I chose to leave management and go back into sales. I missed being manager but the first year, my income doubled. I understood God’s grace and protection. I understood God put that song into my head to protect me, give me confidence, and prove to me that “he could move mountains.” Praise God!

Dear Lord, put your praise songs into our heads. Remind us of your power and your protection. Thank you for the blessings you give us every day. Amen
