Children of Light
Scripture: Ephesians 5:8-14(NIV)
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said:
“Wake up, sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
Devotional
There are over 200 references to light in the Old and New Testaments. The first one was at the very beginning in Genesis 1:3-4. “God saw that the light was good.”
The older I get, the more I like light. Not just a spotlight or desk lamp in one area but light filling the entire room. A dark room with one desk lamp or one side light is not enough for me. I need a large overhead ceiling light. I need a bright room! I agree with God - Light is good.
Jesus refers to himself as the light of the world twice. In John 8:12 He says “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me with never walk in darkness but will have the light of life” and in John 9:5 He shares, “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Light is good.
John 3:20-21 adds that, “everyone that does evil hates the light” for the light exposes their evil deeds. Those who live in the truth come into the light so that they can see what God has done.
In Ephesians, Paul takes living in the light to the next step. In Ephesians 5:8 he writes, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” Jesus’ followers are now the light. We can’t sit in the dark or turn away to sinful acts in the dark. We must bring the Light to everyone and let it reveal their deeds done in the dark. We must expose and illuminate everything in the light. We have the power to bring the light to others. We have the power to wake up. Christ will shine on us.
These verses remind me that I am a light in the world. I can illuminate others and bring them to the Light also. It’s a powerful thought.
How can you use the power of Jesus’ light to take others out of the darkness? Light is good!
