Misguided
Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:1-5(NIV)
1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
Devotional
Mike and I do not watch the news anymore. We have found it depressing and unbelievable as to what some people will do to other people. Our Scripture today is an ominous warning from Paul for the last days. It seems to me that these behaviors are becoming more frequent and are increasingly intensifying. It is the human will that contributes to making this world what it is becoming today. People are turning away from God and do not know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
There are lots of adjectives in this section of the Scripture emphasizing total human depravity. These things have always gone on in the world. One of the issues is that we love ourselves too much. We should remedy this not with self-hate but with love for God and others. We all can fall into this trap very easily if we don’t stay Christ centered. We see entitlement along with unloving and unforgiving people.
These behaviors are self-centered, have a lack of control and have misplaced priorities. We are to have nothing to do with these types of people. As Christians we must not be quick-tempered, violent, or greedy for money, but be gentle and not quarrelsome. We are to actively choose generosity and humility in a culture that rewards greed and pride. The times we live in can be evil times because of evil people. Our hope is in the One who will return and put an end to these times. May we be found faithful upon His return.
