Pure Religion
Scripture: James 1:26-27(NIV)
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
Devotional
James defines true religion as this, from James 1:27, “to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world”. Further, true religion should be defined as being pure and undefiled before God, not just outward appearance, but also in internal character and actions, thus being a servant of God. (as defined by AI)
Being a servant of God covers so many areas and characteristics, where do you fit in? We are all told over and over serving our neighbors, friends and family is part of serving. We are also told to serve everyone, no matter their background or beliefs. As Christians, God loves us all and He expects us to treat everyone as he would. Often that is a difficult thought to process.
For instance, if someone has wronged society in some form and they need some real help, how hard is it to be the one who steps up to help. I know it is difficult for me, but I have learned to find ways to support them. Possibly sending a card, calling them just to listen, and always praying for their improvement in society. These are actions I have learned in my spiritual journey. James tells us that we must accept and learn to support others in time of need, no matter the situation.
As I was writing this devotion, I was thinking about James being Jesus’ brother. At times in James’ life, he was probably called on to support many people that others would shun or neglect, just by the nature of his family structure. He didn’t know how Jesus’ life would end but he saw his brother continually preaching the word of God and doing the works that were pleasing to Him. It makes a difference in your life who you look up to and believe in. It can make you a true Christian.

What True Looks Like
Proverbs 31
She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
Proverbs 31: 20, 26
Bring peace and good news to the poor
Do not despise their low station
Instead, may your pantry extend to them
May you be blessed to share your table
May you listen to their stories
May compassion in you rise
This is true religion
Guard words which want to come from your mouth
Check them before they are aired
Then take the next step
If evil attitude is present
Pray for a clean heart
Pray for a new and right spirit
This is true religion
Your practices are what the world sees
The depth of your sanctification
The working out of God’s great grace
In you abiding
In you residing
O’er you presiding
This shows true redemption
