An Unshakable Kingdom
Scripture: Hebrews 12:25-28(NIV)
25 See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.
Devotional
Have you ever felt the ground shake beneath your feet? I have and it was scary! I remember several years back we were out visiting our son and family in San Deigo. I was standing in the doorway of their kitchen and family room. Planes were constantly flying over the military housing where they lived. There were times when we felt a little rattle from the jets, but this was no rattle. As I was standing there the floor started shaking, pictures were starting to slant, and I gave our son a serious look. He proceeded to tell me that it was just a little earthquake and that it happens from time to time. Such a feeling of being out of control came over me. It was one of the most bizarre things I had ever witnessed.
Our scripture today tells of a time of judgement when God will shake the heavens and the earth. All our earthly treasures and our temporary man-made things will all fall. Everything will be falling apart according to God’s schedule. The only thing that will be left is God’s eternal kingdom. This is his pledge to us: the blessing of an unshakable kingdom. Jesus and his kingdom are the only thing that cannot be shaken.
So how do we receive such an awesome blessing? If you are in Christ, we are asked to serve with gratitude, reverence, and awe. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Live every moment for Christ because we will receive the eternal kingdom. This kingdom will encompass every righteous person that has been granted repentance, those that have been chosen in Christ, those that have been adopted into his family by sovereign grace, those that have been justified, sanctified and given new life.
Faith in Jesus is part of the unshakable kingdom. Fix not only your eyes but your heart, mind, and your everything on God. The nature and character of God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Will you be ready to receive your unshakable blessing?
Poem
Listen Up!
Psalm 94
Pay attention, you dull ones among the crowds! You fools! Will you ever become wise? The one who formed the ear can hear, can he not? The one who made the eyes can see, can he not? The one who disciplines nations can rebuke them, can he not? The one who teaches mankind can discern, can he not? The Lord knows the thoughts of human beings—that they are futile. When I say that my foot is shaking, your gracious love, Lord, will sustain me.
Psalm 94: 8-11, 18
Listen up! While you still have
Ground upon which to
Stand
Shaken up! While you still delay
Ground upon which God
Created
Pay attention! While you still have
Favor in the eyes of your
Creator
Can He not! While you still trust
Be gracious and sustain
You
